Ex-husband's kidnap scheme ends in prison
A MAN who kidnapped his ex-wife's lover to demand a 1 million yuan (US$146,413) ransom and also extorted 300,000 yuan from his victim has been jailed 20 years, a district court said yesterday.
His four accomplices were sentenced from seven to 12 years by the Jiading District People's Court.
Li Kai, a Hubei Province native, divorced Wang Na in 2007. Wang, a sales manager of a local hotel, became involved with a businessman surnamed Zhang, a frequent guest.
When Li, who had always hoped to remarry Wang, heard about the relationship, he began to investigate and found that Zhang had a wife and a daughter.
One day Li, who sometimes visited Wang after their divorce, found a video in her home of Wang and Zhang together and test results showing Wang was pregnant.
He made copies of the video and mailed one and the test results to Zhang. Li also sent a message to Zhang, threatening to expose his affair and demanding Zhang transfer 300,000 yuan to his account, the court heard.
But Li soon spent the money on gambling.
Li, his two brothers-in-law and two friends then discussed kidnapping Zhang to get more money.
On September 30 last year, they drove to where Zhang lived in Jiading District, forced him into the car and drove him to Hubei.
Zhang was forced to call his family asking for 1 million yuan. Zhang's wife, worried about his safety, quickly remitted 640,000 yuan to Li's account. But she had also called the police and the gang was soon rounded up and most of the money returned.
