Ex-official given 15 years for graft

A RETIRED senior official from the Pudong New Area was yesterday sentenced to 15 years in prison for corruption, a court said.

Wan Zengwei, a former director of the land and planning bureau of Pudong, and ex-Party chief of the Shanghai Accumulation Fund Management Center, was found guilty of receiving bribes totaling almost 6 million yuan (US$963,788 million) over more than a decade, the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court said.

Wan worked in the land bureau between July 1993 and September 2000, serving as secretary of its party committee, deputy director and director. He went on to become party chief of the Pudong Academy of Reform and Development, and director and party chief of the Shanghai Accumulation Fund Management Center before retiring in August 2009.

Prosecutors said he received property worth 200,000 yuan while employed at the bureau and more than 4 million yuan worth of bribes while employed in subsequent official positions.

After retirement, he was paid a further 1.7 million yuan.

The court said Wan was given a relatively lenient sentence as he had cooperated with the authorities. He pleaded guilty to all charges, alerted the authorities to other crimes he had committed and returned all of his ill-gotten gains, it said.

As well as the prison term, Wan was deprived of all political rights for four years.
