Expat becomes unlikely hero for brave deed in highway accident

A FOREIGNER, who helped rescue two injured passengers stuck in a car that was crushed between two trucks at the exit of an expressway yesterday afternoon, was roundly praised for his efforts.
Tommy Patton told Shanghai Daily yesterday that he was not a hero and only did what he could and should do.
“I saw them and helped them,” Patton said.
He left the scene of the accident after helping them out.
According to xinmin.cn, Patton used to be a firefighter in the United States.
He was slightly injured after rubbing his arm against the badly damaged car.
The accident happened about 1:30pm at the Jiasong Road N. exit of the G1501 Expressway in Jiading District.
It caused a six-car pile-up, involving four container trucks, one sedan and a cargo truck.
Preliminary investigation showed the last container truck rear-ended the sedan, causing the pile-up.
The sedan was squeezed in between the two trucks, trapping the two passengers inside.
“I saw the foreigner squatting outside the car when I got stuck on the jammed expressway,” said netizen “kisspengtai,” who claimed he was at the accident spot and uploaded a picture on his Weibo blog.
Patton kept talking to the injured passengers in the car and tried to keep them conscious,” kisspengtai said.
Patton works in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, and has long-term plans of staying in China. This was the third time that he had helped accident victims in the country, xinmin.cn reported.
Patton said he was trained in basic rescue operation, especially involving car crashes, when he worked as a firefighter in the US.
He first tried to stop the bleeding of the passengers and kept talking to them with the help of his Chinese companions. After emergency workers arrived, he cooperated with them and helped to get the injured passengers out of the seriously damaged car.
Patton said it was sad to see lots of people at the scene of accidents but not offering any help, xinmin.cn reported.
He said even holding the victims’ hands can help in calming them down.
Last year, Richard Quimby, a male nurse from the United States, and local residents rushed to help a family of three who were knocked down by a bus in suburban Baoshan District in October.
