Expo menu food for thought
The designated restaurants for the 2010 World Expo will be selected during the first Shanghai Food Festival beginning next month, tourism authorities said yesterday.
From September 13 to October 6, more than 120 eateries, from restaurants established for more than 100 years to small dumpling soup bars, will participate in the event.
Food will include authentic Shanghai cuisine, delights from other Chinese provinces, snacks and traditional countryside fare, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
During the festival, food exhibitions will be held in many downtown areas, including the City God Temple and the Wujiang Road areas.
Visitors can taste the cuisine and recommend their favorites to organizers, no matter whether they prefer mini steamed dumplings or lamb cuisine from Qibao Town in Minhang District.
Shanghai Cuisine Association will select the best food to recommend to Expo visitors. "Every restaurant will have five to 10 cuisines on their list," said Shen Siming, director of the association.
Organizers said the festival would also be a good opportunity for restaurants to improve their service.
"Our task is to ensure Expo visitors have safe, delicious, healthy and nutritious food," said Shen.
Tourism authorities also said that during the Expo, big restaurants must provide English services.
An English version of Chinese cuisine names will also be released to foreign tourists.
Huangpu District has been at the forefront of presenting English-language versions of menus for Chinese cuisine.
More than 3,000 dishes, beverages and liquor are on menus in the district.
"At present the translation of Chinese cuisine names is not unified and many translations containhuge errors," Shen said.
