Ex-soldier swindles 180,000 yuan from his dates
AN ex-serviceman pretending to be an army officer scammed two women out of more than 180,000 yuan (US$28,500) and was recently sentenced to four years in prison, the Qingpu District People's Court said today.
The swindler surnamed Zhang was a retired private who served two years in the military before 2005. In October 2010, he faked his identity when registering an account on a matchmaking website, prosecutors said.
Soon he met the two victims and began to date with them, lying that he was a battalion commander. To earn their trust, Zhang talked about his army life with vivid description and showed a forged officer certificate to his "girlfriends," prosecutors said.
Zhang used various excuses to cheat 170,000 yuan from one woman and 10,000 yuan from the other between October 2010 and last August.
