Failed gold robber gets 5 years

A man who tried to hold up a gold store, injuring a security guard, has been sentenced to five and a half years behind bars for robbery, according to Jiading District People’s Court.

The attempted heist occurred about 8am on December 15, when the Laofengxiang Jewelry outlet on Qinghe Road in Jiading had just opened.

The defendant surnamed Ye dashed into the store and brandished a knife toward a security guard who had opened the door for him. The security guard fought back and grabbed the knife from Ye, who managed to escape. The guard suffered slight wounds that weren’t detailed by the court.

Ye didn’t make a successful getaway. Passers-by and residents chased and subdued him not far from the store.

Investigation showed Ye, 38, was a migrant worker from southwest Sichuan Province. He planned to rob the store to pay for gambling debts.

Though his robbery failed, he had used violent methods and had caused injury, the court ruled. He was sentenced to five and a half years and fined 5,000 yuan (US$724).
