Fake Haibao sellers get jail

THREE men who produced and sold fake Haibao plush toys worth 450,000 yuan (US$66,372) were sentenced to between one year to four years in prison yesterday.

The Huangpu District People's Court ruled that the trio had sold nearly 260,000 fake Haibao toys from August 2009 to February 2010. Besides, police also confiscated more than 60,000 fake Haibao toys which hadn't been sold. The confiscated Haibao toys were valued at 22,800 yuan.

Bai Yanzhao, one of the producers, cast doubts on the sales volume figure as alleged by prosecutors though he agreed to the charge of producing and selling counterfeits. He put the sales volume at 200,000 yuan.

Bai, 29, a Henan Province native, met Zhao Chaozhong, a vendor from Sichuan Province who is still at large, in the city a few years ago. Seeing fake Haibao toys being sold on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall before the World Expo, the duo decided to produce the toys, the court heard.

They rented a room near the pedestrian mall and hired Bai's father, Bai Maidui, and Zhao's brother, Zhao Chaolong, to sell the toys.

Police caught Bai Maidui and Zhao Chaolong on February 25. Bai Yanzhao was captured the next day.
