Fake insurance spurs Ctrip.com lawsuit
A CTRIP.COM registered member is seeking a public apology and compensation of 100,000 yuan (US$14,640) from the well-known travel Website, accusing it of selling him falsified insurance policies.
Ctrip.com countered that the man attempted to extort the company by making use of a management slip-up, though it admitted he did receive fake insurance policies.
Yangpu District People's Court didn't announce a verdict after the hearing yesterday because the two sides diverged so greatly in opinion.
The plaintiff Liang Yuxiang said he went with his wife to Sanya, Hainan Province, in November 2008 for their honeymoon. He booked two air tickets and two policies of Ping'an Insurance through Ctrip.com.
When Liang received the 40-yuan insurance policies, he found characters written incorrectly and the insurance covering just one day, not enough for his flight, which went past midnight.
Liang checked with Ping'an but was told there was no policy with his number in the insurer's system. Ctrip.com insisted the policies were real at first. Three months later, the Website posted an apology on a news Website, admitting the two policies were falsified, the court heard.
