A WOMAN in Jinshan District has been detained for a fake kidnapping to extort 30,000 yuan (US$4,836) from her husband to cover her gambling debt, police said. Her accomplice, who called her husband and asked for the ransom, was also detained. The woman’s husband, a man surnamed Ruan, called the police instead of paying the ransom on May 20 when the incident played out. Suspicion was raised against the woman, surnamed Xia, when police found her alone in a hotel room. Hotel employees told police she seemed to be friends with her “kidnapper.”
