‘Fake’ traffic cop in the dock
POLICE in Fengxian District have detained a man for posing as a traffic police officer.
The suspect, surnamed Ji, bought the police uniform, ID card and a siren light from a vendor and came up with the idea of playing the cop.
“The suspect’s bogus uniform looks less refined than the original ones, but at first glance it is hard to tell,” Cao Rong, a police spokesman in Fengxian District told Shanghai Daily.
Ji claimed he never succeeded in “punishing” any drivers. But as per Chinese law, he faces up to three years in prison for defrauding people by impersonating a government official.
Police were alerted about Ji after a truck driver surnamed Tang reported an encounter with him. Tang was stopped in Haiwan Town by Ji who claimed his truck was overloaded and has to issue him a ticket.
But Tang got suspicious because police usually issue tickets after weighing trucks. Moreover, Ji was driving a car model that is not used by police.
Tang grew even more suspicious after Ji let him go when he tried to call his supervisor.
Police tracked down Ji’s car and detained him yesterday. They wouldn’t say whether they would take any action against the vendor who sold the fake uniform.
Those who illegally produce, purchase or sell police equipment can be jailed for up to three years.
