Falling rock kills elderly man
AN elderly man was killed by a falling stone at a scenic spot on Yuntai Mountain, a macaques reserve in Henan Province, said officials.
Initial reports suggested that the stone that struck Weng Mao, 67, former board chairman of Shanghai Guanshengyuan Food (Group), may have been kicked off by monkeys, but the travel agency that organized the trip said it did not believe the animals were involved in the incident because it occurred a good distance from the valley they inhabit.
“There were falling stones when we arrived at the scene with police, which was dangerous,” Zhou Yi, head of the travel agency, told Shanghai Daily.
The former food industry executive, who was on his way back from the Xiaozhaigou attraction to the Luliang pavilion at 9:25am on Tuesday when he was struck, died at Xiuwu County People’s Hospital. Roads to the scenic spot were closed pending an investigation.
