Family ‘kill themselves over cash worries’

A FAMILY were found dead in their apartment in downtown Hongkou District yesterday, after apparently committing suicide over money worries.
Emergency services found a couple, who were in their 60s, and their 25-year-old son lying on the floor of their Guangzhong Road home.
Medics pronounced them dead at the scene.
Police discovered a brazier of burned coal in the room and the family were said to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Officers received a call shortly after 1pm from a woman saying she had received a note mailed by her sister, saying she was going to commit suicide due to money problems.
When the sister went to check on the family, there was no response.
Neighbors said the family were burdened by heavy debts after an investment in futures failed.
A decorator working next door said he had chatted with the woman on Tuesday and she had seemed fine.
“She praised my work and looked well,” said the decorator, surnamed Zhao.
