Family wins compensation bid
A family from Yunnan Province has managed to gain 40,000 yuan (US$5,891) in compensation for the death of a family member through mediation by Jiading District People's Court.
Wu Jun was hit by a taxi while walking on an expressway on December 19, 2008, court officials said. He was sent to hospital but later left without doctors' permission and drowned in a pond.
His family asked for tens of thousands of yuan in compensation from the taxi company and the hospital.
The plaintiffs said Wu had been in good health but became disoriented because he suffered brain injuries in the accident, so left the hospital and drowned.
They blamed the hospital for its lack of supervision.
Wu, a government employee in Yunnan, was judged to bear major responsibility for his death. Considering his family's economic difficulties, judges persuaded the taxi company and the hospital to make some compensation.
