Fast food giant hit by delivery gremlins

FAST food fans looking to have a McDonald's brought to their door yesterday lunchtime went hungry after the burger giant suspended its delivery service due to technical problems.

McDonald's decided to halt deliveries in the city after its telephone ordering system froze during an upgrading process.

The company has warned the problem could occur again as the system upgrade is ongoing and apologized for any inconvenience caused.

An upgrade of McDonald's "Mailesong" system - which includes ordering and delivery services through its hotline - will be completed in the near future, its public relations officer Liu Xiaolin told Shanghai Daily yesterday. But Liu did not give a timescale.

The problem with the delivery service was discovered at about 12:45pm, Liu said, when many customers were calling to order lunch.

Web user Wang Kai posted on the microblog at sina.com complaining he could not order his meal.

The system was restored at about 1:40pm, Liu said.

Liu declined to reveal how many calls had been received during the down period, saying that would impinge on commercial secrets.
