鈥楩atal鈥 gate costs firm US$4,500
A PROPERTY management company has been ordered to pay 28,000 yuan (US$4,500) in compensation to the family of a woman who died because an ambulance sent to treat her could not gain access to the residential compound in which she lived.
The incident happened in 2013, when a medical crew dispatched by the Shanghai Medical Emergency Center was unable to get past a security gate at the compound in Qingpu District.
The ambulance arrived at the perimeter of the complex within 10 minutes, but was unable to get any closer because of a height restriction on the gate, the Qingpu District Court heard.
The medical team declined to walk to the patient claiming they had too much equipment to carry.
Though the ambulance eventually made it inside the complex, it was too late to save the octogenarian patient.
The family of the dead woman filed a lawsuit against the medical center and Zhaoxiang Property Management Co.
The court ruled that the center had not been negligent, but said the gate at the compound had not been approved by the authorities, so found against the management company.
