Father, son fraudsters detained

A FATHER and son have been detained by police for credit card fraud that netted them more than 100,000 yuan (US$16,278), Huangpu police said yesterday.

The pair, both surnamed Ma, tricked people into handing over their credit cards on the offer of increasing their credit limits.

One victim, surnamed Huang, said he met with the younger Ma on February 16 after seeing an advert for his services near an ATM machine. The pair met the following day at a commercial building on Xizang Road where Huang handed over three credit cards.

Ma left the building with the cards, but came back soon after and returned them to Huang. Ma then left again and asked Huang to wait for him. Half an hour later Huang received a message from his bank saying 49,000 yuan had been withdrawn from his accounts.

He realized he had been duped and called the police.

Officers were able to identify Ma as he had left his cellphone with Huang. Their investigations led them to the elder Ma, whom they suspected of being involved in a similar con in Jing’an District on February 17.

The pair were traced to Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, where they were arrested on February 26 with the help of local authorities.

The father and son were found to have committed eight similar thefts in the nine days prior to their arrest.
