Father upset at finding daughter, 14, is bar girl

A father who discovered his 14-year-old daughter was working in a bar has sparked an official investigation.

Authorities in Jing’an said yesterday they would inspect entertainment venues across the district after he sought help from the media for his daughter who had refused to come home.

His daughter, he said, was scantily dressed and was seen selling alcohol at Mook, a bar on Nanjing Road W. The father surnamed Zhang said he was “desperate” to have her safely back home.

“I didn’t believe it at first until I saw her sitting behind the bar, wearing heavy make-up, cosmetic contact lenses and false eyelashes,” Zhang told Shanghai Radio. “Her cleavage was exposed, and I was scared to death when I saw her like that,” he said.

His daughter wasn’t returning home until midnight after becoming a bar girl, and when Zhang tried to take her home, she ran away after seeing him.

When her father found out what she was up to, he said she promised to come home with him, but fled from the bar’s back door.

She then started staying out overnight, and blocked her father’s calls to her phone.

Despite school being about to resume, Zhang said he was unable to persuade his daughter to come home.

He said he was told by his daughter that there were six teenage girls up to 16 years old working at the bar and one of them had not returned home for over a year.

Bar staff said the youngest girl working Mook was a teenager, Shanghai Radio reported.

There is a sign at the entrance of the bar stating anyone aged under 18 years old is not allowed entry, but security guards did not ask any guests to show their identification cards, the radio reported.

Undercover reporters found a girl around 12 and 13 years old working behind the bar, but she was taken away by other staff before reporters could talk with her, the radio report said.
