First-aid training for domestic helpers
SIXTY domestic helpers and care givers, known as ayi, had first-aid training with the Red Cross last month —the first ayi batch to be trained in Shanghai.
Most ayi don’t know basic life support skills, nor are clear about how to react in cases of emergency, training experts said, adding the helpers have little idea of where to be trained.
In response, emergency training provided by the Red Cross is now freely available in the Pudong New Area Women’s Development Guide Center.
The first ayi batch was trained on June 23 to deal with choking, bleeding and heart stroke, among other frequent emergencies.
They learnt how to properly bandage the wounds, carry out CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and use AEDs (automated external defibrillators).
According to the Pudong Women’s Federation, emergency training will be included as mandatory for students at the guide center that provides 42 training courses. But students don’t need to pay for extra fees, and in the near future, more life support skills will be included.
Last year, Pudong Red Cross Society trained 75,567 people, 2,124 of whom learnt how to react when emergencies occur among the elderly.
The area’s government has placed 800 AEDs in office buildings, community centers and other public venues.
