Food safety crimes

SHANGHAI police held 119 suspects in 66 food safety criminal cases in the first half of the year, authorities said yesterday.

Cases included counterfeit foodstuffs such as infant formula, issues with seasonings and incidents of food poisoning.

Food safety officials said complaints regarding restaurant dishes accounted for more than half of all food safety complaints citywide.

These included unlicensed operations, hygiene and the disposal of kitchen waste.

Around 96 percent of major food products met standards in the first half of the year, said officials.
