Food safety fears over green-headed shrimps
A photograph of green-headed cooked shrimps posted online has raised food safety concerns in Shanghai.
The picture of the unusual-looking crustaceans has been forwarded more than 1,000 times on the Weibo microblog, attracting many comments from concerned web users.
It was posted last weekend by Zhu Yin, a local magazine editor.
Zhu said the shrimps were the expected pink color when cooked at noon but turned green after being heated in the microwave that evening.
Many web users suspected the creatures might have been contaminated with illegal additives while growing.
But aquatic experts from Tongchuan Road Seafood Market said the green hue may be algae that became visible after water in the shrimps' heads dried.
