Four years鈥 jail for bus driver in fatal crash near airport
THE driver of an airport shuttle bus, who caused the deaths of two passengers, was sentenced to four years in jail for causing a traffic accident by the people’s court of Pudong New Area yesterday.
The collision occurred at 9:30am on August 23 when Gu Cong was driving an Airport Line 4 bus, clocking more than 90 kilometers per hour in an 80km zone in the Huaxia Elevated Road in the direction of the Pudong airport.
He said he was carrying more than 30 passengers, who were not wearing their safety belts. Nor was he. He also told the court he was nearsighted but wasn’t wearing his glasses.
The court said he had not noticed a road maintenance vehicle had stopped in front of the bus.
He crashed into it and then hit a guard rail. Two passengers died and several others were injured.
Gu denied that he was not concentrating, and said he had misjudged the distances between the two vehicles.
He obtained his driving license in 1999 and had driven the airport shuttle bus since October 2004.
He was given a lighter sentence because the road maintenance vehicle was also deemed responsible for the accident, and Gu had expressed regret and was willing to compensate the victims, the court said.
Shanghai Airport Bus Co has offered compensation to the victims and the injured.
“It’s my fault. What I can do now is just to say sorry to victims’ families and also my company,” Gu told the court yesterday.
