Fraud ring leader gets 10 years
THE leader of a Shanghai-based telecom fraud ring that swindled 600,000 yuan (US$96,266) from 400 people was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Songjing District People's Court said yesterday.
The ring conned people by telling them they had won prizes.
The leader, surnamed Wang, 28, set up the company in December 2011. He hired the eight other members of the ring from a job hunting website and taught them telephone sales skills.
Prosecutors said Wang bought clients' information, including names and phone numbers, from some express companies. His salesmen then pretended to be customer service specialists from an online shopping call center and called clients to con them.
The "salesmen" would claim the client had won a prize of 2,000 points by shopping at online stores and the points could be redeemed into smart phones or tablet computers worth 5,000 yuan if the client paid 1,300 yuan to 2,500 yuan more.
They also pretended to be employees from telecom companies and claimed the client had won an iPhone or an iPad but needed to pay 1,300 yuan to buy a telephone recharge card.
Police busted the telecom fraud ring on March 21. The other members of the ring also received sentences but the exact punishment was unavailable.
