Fudan student drowns in Tsinghua University’s famous pond

A Fudan University student drowned in a pond at Tsinghua University in Beijing after trying to walk on ice, Beijing News reported today.

Fudan confirmed the incident, saying it has been intimidated by Beijing police. It said the student was a freshman and travelled to Beijing for the winter vacation.

Beijing News said the two freshmen were friends and had alcohol before tragedy struck at midnight.

The duo tried to cross the pond, which was covered with ice, from the northwest to southeast but fell into the water near the middle of the pond.

The paper said the ice was thicker at the western end but not in the east.

The pond at Tsinghua was made famous by well-known Chinese writer Zhu Ziqing, who had written an essay about its beauty in the moonlight. There is a statue of Zhu on the northwest and a board at the southeast bank with pond’s name “Shuimuqinghua.”

The newspaper said both students had fallen into the pond. The Tsinghua was rescued by his schoolmates but the Fudan student died before help could arrive.

There were warning signs around the pond, warning people about the dangers of stepping on the ice.

Police ruled out suspicious play.
