Fugitive detained after 8 years on run
A MAN wanted in connection with a robbery in Shanghai eight years ago is in custody after being arrested last month in Beijing.
Police believe the fugitive, surnamed Tian, to be the leader of a 10-person criminal gang that stole more than 700,000 yuan (US$113,000) worth of goods from a company in Qingpu District in December 2006.
Nine people were apprehended and charged with the crime, but their alleged ringleader evaded the authorities.
Shanghai police suspected Tian, a native of east China’s Shandong Province, but were unable to track him down, despite help from authorities in his home province.
The breakthrough came three weeks ago on December 16, when Beijing police discovered Tian had been working with his brother as a street vendor in the capital. The discovery was made after the fugitive’s elder sibling called police to report the theft of some clothing from his stall.
Tian, now 28, was taken into custody and later sent back to Shanghai where he is being questioned.
Local police claim the suspect confessed to being involved in the 2006 robbery and said that he had been living in Beijing for the past eight years under the alias “Zhang Cheng.”
