Gang jailed for stealing motorist with trap
A man who stole more than 40,000 yuan (US$6,289) from a motorist while his partner pretended to be hit by the victim's car was given five years and three months in prison, the Changning District People's Court said yesterday.
Wu Lijin, 37, received the harshest punishment among the four members convicted of theft. Liu Zhonghui, 30, was sentenced to four and 3/4 years in jail, while Pan Haibin and Chen Youhua each will stay behind bars for three years.
The four were also fined a total of 24,000 yuan, the court ruled.
On March 15, the gang targeted Li Bin, who just came out of a bank on Yan'an Road W. Liu intentionally bumped into Li's car and crouched down as if he was hurt. Pan and Chen told Li to get out of his car to divert his attention as Wu took the chance to steal Li's bag containing 40,000 yuan in cash, 25 bank cards and five company stamps.
After apologizing to Liu, Li went back to his car. As he started the engine, he saw the "injured" man running across the road and then he found his bag was gone.
The four pleaded guilty in the court. Wu said he and Liu each took more than 17,000 yuan while Pan and Chen shared the rest.
They were arrested by the police on March 25 and 30.
