Gang of 28 arrested for stealing over 175 phones
TWENTY-EIGHT suspects have been arrested for stealing and then selling more than 175 mobile phones, police said.
Police in Pudong said they caught one of the suspects, a man surnamed Huang, red-handed.
He was handing over a stolen phone to another suspect surnamed Sun on April 11. That phone was pickpocketed from someone at a bus station, police added. Investigation against the two suspects then led to them and the others being arrested last month.
Zhou Peizhong, one of the officers in charge of the investigation, told Shanghai Daily that the phones were mostly stolen in shopping malls, bus and Metro stations as well as on buses and trains.
Fewer than one in five victims reported their loss to the police, Zhou said. “We encourage them to report to the police so we can know where exactly the thefts most frequently happen so as to better look out for the pickpockets.”
So far police have managed to determine the identity of 46 owners of phones and have published information on a further 132 phones including the alleged time they were stolen, along with the brand, model, color and IMEI number.
Zhou recounted a recent case where two pickpockets were arrested for stealing from rental bike riders.
“Working in pairs, they looked for potential victims at bike parking spots and then stole mobile phones from their pockets or backpacks when they started to ride away or stopped at a red light,” he said.
Pudong police said they had arrested 57 suspects in a crackdown on pickpockets since the beginning of April.
