Gang which sold and stole cars busted
THREE men involved in a racket of selling and stealing cars have been detained, police said yesterday.
The trio, surnamed Dai, Li and Bai, sold cars to several people in Jiading District at bargain prices only to steal them back from them with the help of GPS trackers.
In one case, the gang, sold a Chevrolet to a man surnamed Fang via a trading website for used cars. But Fang had no idea that a GPS tracker had been installed in the trunk of the car.
Fang also did not realize that the car plate was fake.
As the gang was able to track the car, they followed Fang in a Buick car all the way down south to a town in Rui’an city in Zhejiang Province. The stole the “sold” car with a backup key.
Having stolen the car, the gang replaced the car plate and drove it back to Shanghai, but the police managed to locate them later from surveillance cameras. They found that the Buick closely followed the Chevrolet both to and from Shanghai.
Police found a GPS tracking set, a computer with a tracking software, more than 20 fake car plates, 13 fake identity cards and 9 fake vehicle registration certificates from their apartment in Jiading.
