Gifts, prizes for transport card users

Transportation card users stand to win gifts worth 1 million yuan (US$163,390) in a lucky draw to mark the Car-Free Day on Sunday.

Unlike before, there will be no ban on vehicles for this year’s Car-Free Day as previous efforts  to ban vehicles only had symbolic value and did not serve any practical purposes.

Authorities said there was no major improvement in traffic conditions than any other normal days. The lucky draw, therefore, is just another effort to encourage people from taking the public transport.

Each transportation card has a serial number, and 2,500 of them will be randomly chosen by the Shanghai Transportation Card Co as winners.

The card owners will share the prize and gifts totaling 1 million yuan.

The cards must meet the following requirements: They were issued by the Shanghai Transportation Card Co and had been used for more than 400 times in the city’s public buses, Metro and ferries from September 1, 2012, until the end of last month.

The draw will be held under the supervision of a notary officer and the results will be publicized on Sunday.

The Shanghai Transportation Card Company has issued 49 million cards since 1999, with 80 percent of them being used in buses and subways.
