Girl has 'charity' heart surgery

JIN Xiayu, a six-year-old girl, has become the first patient to undergo "charity" surgery after the Shanghai Red Cross designated two hospitals to offer treatment for needy children with congenital heart diseases.

Under the aegis of a Shanghai Red Cross special program, Jin yesterday had an operation to fix a heart problem at Shanghai Chest Hospital and is expected to be discharged early next week with a healthy heart.

A three-year-old girl with complicated heart disease and a 22-month-old baby boy with an ailing heart will also undergo charity surgery at Shanghai Children's Medical Center today.

Officials from the Shanghai Red Cross said the charity program has offered more than 953,000 yuan (US$146,615) to help children with heart problems.

The program was established in June last year to help cover the medical cost for local children with congenital heart disease and offer surgery and post-surgery nutrition.

In addition, seven needy children from Zunyi, Guizhou Province, also received free heart surgery yesterday or will undergo operation today at Shanghai Children's Hospital, as a gift for Children's Day which falls today.
