Glimpse of global beauty on display at travel mart

Visitors to the three-day 2016 China International Travel Mart that opened in Shanghai yesterday are able to enjoy a glimpse of the world’s landscapes, culture and customs.

Performances, virtual reality experiences, lucky draws and tourism promotions are featured at more than 2,500 stands at Asia’s biggest tourism trade fair, which drew participants from 106 countries and regions.

Held in the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area, it is jointly hosted by China National Tourism Administration, Civil Aviation Administration of China and Shanghai government. Tourism authorities and travel operators brought their latest itineraries, tour packages and cultural performances to the venue.

Shanghai aimed to build itself into an international tourist destination welcoming tourists from home and abroad, Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong said at the opening ceremony.

Thailand, a popular overseas destination for Chinese tourists, has cracked down on unrealistically priced tours designed to trap tourists, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, said at the event.

The country is the guest of honor country at this year’s event.

“We have received many complaints over unreasonably low price or even free deals of Chinese tour groups, and tourists were said to be forced into shopping or being locked inside buses with no air-conditioning and food,” she said.

Travel companies or agencies found luring Chinese tourists into buying overpriced products would be punished, Kobkarn added.

Elsewhere at the event, the Hawaii stand displays Hawaiian Hula dance performances. Through virtual reality technology, visitors can experience the picturesque beauty of Oahu, noted for its sailing and snorkeling, and Kauai, the oldest island in Hawaii that features sharp rugged cliffs and lush gardens and valleys.

“We invite Chinese tourists to explore more because there are many undiscovered places in Hawaii,” said Randy Baldemor, chief operating officer of Hawaii Convention Center.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations released 50 cross-border travel routes in Southeast Asia, ranging from two to 26 nights and catering to the demands of both tourists who have visited the region and first-time visitors.

Shanghai stands invite tourists to experience “a 3D naked eye show” as well as virtual reality experiences that allows them to appreciate the beauty of Shanghai Tower, Shanghai Jinmao Tower, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center.

Yunnan Province, meanwhile, is promoting rail tours by offering discounts on scenic spots. The Shanghai-Kunming high-speed railway will open to traffic from November 30.
