Golf club workers struck by lightning

TWO golf club workers were struck by lightning yesterday afternoon in Baoshan District while passing balls to customers on a driving range.

The injured staff, a 23-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, were rushed from Lake Malaren Golf Club to hospital.

They were said to be in a serious condition and last night were still receiving treatment.

From about 2:30pm yesterday afternoon, northern parts of the city were hit by brief but strong thundershowers, including Luodian Town, where the golf club is located.

Baoshan District weather bureau issued a lightning warning.

The golf club workers were sent to Luodian Hospital and later transferred to Baogang Hospital.

It was reported that their hearts had stopped beating after they were struck. While doctors got their hearts beating again, they were reported to be in serious condition requiring emergency treatment.

The club said it had safety measures in place.

“We have lightning protection facilities on the driving ranges but it’s hard to escape from lightning,” a club staffer, surnamed Gu.

“This kind of incident has never happened before.”

A 5-meter-high lightning conductor rod could be seen on the driving range but the area where the workers were did not appear to be under its protection, according to reports

According to Ni Tongbiao, an official at the district weather bureau, the club’s lightning protection facilities should have been sufficient.

“I think it’s coincidence that where they were is beyond the lightning rod’s protection.”
