Greased pipes deter slippery characters
No money to put up surveillance cameras in your neighborhood to deter burglars? Don’t worry, try using grease instead!
In a community in Changning District, police smeared external water and gas pipes with industrial grease to prevent burglars shimmying up the outside of buildings.
And since then, break-ins have stopped.
The grease, intended for construction use, can be purchased in construction material markets and the slippery effect lasts for about six months, said officers.
However, while the community on Hongjing Road has reported no burglaries since the greasy crime prevention option was tried out in July, officers admit grease cannot replace security cameras.
Sun Weifeng, a community police officer, said the initiative was a temporary fix due to the neighborhood’s financial problems.
Built in 2003, the community always lacked a residential committee, said Sun.
An official is currently responsible for management duties, but cannot collect maintenance fees.
The main income of the community now comes from parking fee collection, but this is far from enough to invest in security camera equipment, said Sun.
And the absence of security cameras makes it more difficult to solve break-ins, added Sun.
