Greek completes correction program

A GREEK businessman jailed for drunk driving has completed a community correction program in Fengxian District, after being released from prison on medical grounds.

Fengxian District People’s Procuratorate said Sotirios Droulias, 39, was the first expat to participate in community correction in the district.

The executive with a foreign company in the district undertook community service work, including cleaning and hair dressing.

Droulias was required to report to the correction program center every day in the first three months and once a month thereafter.

Prosecutors developed a special personal correction plan for the Greek, including an individual education program.

Community prosecutor Jiang Lixia was responsible for supervising Droulias’ correction.

Droulias was caught driving while drunk in May 2012 and given a six-month prison term.

He was released on a medical parole due to what were described as serious injuries on his feet.

Instead, he joined a community correction program.

“The most challenging thing was to find an interpreter for him as he couldn’t understand Chinese,” Jiang said, “We learned that his secretary was bilingual in Greek and Chinese and asked her to interpret for him.”

When he finished the program, Droulias thanked the prosecutors for all their help and said that he wouldn’t drunk drive again.

Community correction is aimed at people who commit minor offenses and can serve a sentence in their communities.
