Guesthouse trial gets the green light
VISITORS will have more accommodation options to choose from in the future now that a two-year guesthouse trial in the Pudong New Area has been given the green light, the government said yesterday.
The move follows the approval of draft safety regulations for such premises.
The construction and operation of guesthouses was not previously covered by specific regulations.
Most existing guesthouses in Shanghai operate in a grey area because they are unlicensed and therefore do not necessarily meet fire and food safety standards.
The first guesthouses will be renovated residences in old streets in Pudong, the local government said. In addition to the accommodation being developed around the resort, guesthouses will be built around peach orchards in Pudong, which is home to an annual peach festival.
The new guesthouses will be different from B&Bs overseas, offering a style of accommodation that blends the traditional charm of the nongjiale (happy farmer house) with the modern comforts of the conventional hotel, said Jian Danian, deputy governor of Pudong.
If the trial proves to be a success, the development of guesthouses will be promoted citywide after two years, officials said.
At present, only business entities are permitted to operate guesthouses.
