Gym closes down, owner can't be found
A GYM closed overnight earlier this week in Hongkou District and no one has been able to contact the owner as police investigate the case.
Jianlibao Gym on Sichuan Road N. was open as usual until July 31, but the next day members complained that it was closed without notice.
The franchised gym has about 1,000 members, some of who had just purchased one-year memberships last month.
Jianlibao Group, which signed a contract with the owner, surnamed Wang, said they will take care of the members.
Chen, a member who bought a one-year membership earlier this year, said he went to the gym on Sunday only to find it was empty.
"Everything was OK the day before," Chen said.
Chen added that the gym was offering memberships at an extremely low price last month and that the number of employees had decreased.
The gym is locked up and has a note out front that reads "closed for repairs."
Three clerks from Jianlibao Group are keeping a record of members.
One clerk surnamed Wu said the company plans to reopen the gym in two weeks and that memberships will be extended for two months.
The owner also owed rent, wages and bills for water, power and gas amounting to nearly 200,000 yuan (US$29,544), Wu said.
Policeman Wang Silei told Shanghai Daily yesterday that it was unclear if the owner was guilty of fraud, but that they were investigating the case.
