Hackers get 4 years in data theft

TWO hackers were sentenced to four years in prison and fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,900) yesterday for hacking into three Japanese shopping websites and stealing credit card information on thousands of clients.

Prosecutors in Xuhui District People's Court said the two convicts, surnamed Shi and Yue, invaded three websites including Asj.co.jp, Unico-fan.co.jp and Tennis-gear.jp between March and May last year.

Shi, 25, said he had worked for a website company and a man surnamed Fang hired Yue and him in December 2010 to hack into the sites and steal clients' credit card information. The pair stole the data of more than 9,200 clients and provided it to Fang. Fang used some of the information to shop on overseas websites, the court heard.

Prosecutors said altogether 79 pieces of the stolen credit card information were valid and thus could be used to make Visa purchases. The court, however, did not hear much about how the pair benefited from their action.

Fang was charged separately from Shi and Yue and has not yet gone to trial.
