Hallucinating driver who hit 4 pedestrians gets 2 years
A DRUGGED driver who injured four people and crashed into several vehicles while high on crystal meth was jailed for two years yesterday.
The 30-year-old, surnamed Xue, told police that he was hallucinating at the time of the incidents in Pudong.
Tests showed he had taken methylamphetamine.
Xue was jailed for endangering public security, Pudong New Area People’s Court said.
The court said it showed leniency as Xue had compensated the injured passers-by — none of whom were seriously hurt — and owners of the damaged vehicles to a total of more than 270,000 yuan (US$44,331).
Xue also revealed the names of drug dealers, which could be seen as a meritorious act, the court heard.
The court heard Xue tried to turn to his uncle for help after he had taken drugs and attacked a relative on March 30.
Reaching the residential complex where his uncle lives in Pudong, he was stopped by a security guard, prosecutors said.
An argument ensued, ending when Xue suddenly reversed, before driving up to the gate again, damaging several cars and mopeds in the process.
Xue fled in his car, injuring four passers-by some time later when his vehicle mounted the sidewalk on Changqing Road.
He was only stopped when his car became jammed in a store’s security shutters.
In another case in March, a drugged driver who injured a policeman was given a two-year jail term for intentional injury.
He accelerated when a police officer standing in front of his car asked him to get out. The impact threw the officer several meters forward, leaving him with multiple fractures.
Xue’s case was the first of endangering public security through drug driving in the city, said court officials.
