Hefty sentences for trio found with fake money

A LOCAL court sentenced three people to from nine months to 11 years in prison yesterday for buying and selling fake money with a face value of 1.13 million yuan (US$165,447).

The hearing was broadcast online to show the court's determination to crack down on counterfeiting, said judges at the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court.

Wang Zidong, 46, was sentenced to 11 years. Song Xiuhong, 45, was jailed for 10 and a half years for buying fake money and his wife, Cheng Xinxia, was given nine months for possessing fake cash.

Prosecutors said Wang brought the fake money from Shenqiu County, Henan Province, to Shanghai by long-distance bus on November 6, 2008, planning to sell it to Song.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided Song's house and found the fake cash.

Police found fake cash with a face value of more than 10,000 yuan in Cheng's bag when she returned home.

All the defendants claimed they didn't know anything about the fake money and blamed each other.
