THE Shanghai Zoo yesterday introduced four spotted hyenas to the public - the first time the animals have been kept in the city. Born in China in 2007 and 2009, the hyenas were brought from the Shijia-zhuang Zoo in Hebei Province. They are housed in an outdoor cage next to sun bears. The two elder hyenas - a male and a female - are sexually mature. It is not possible to sex the younger two until they are older. Hyenas may look ungainly, but are fierce predators, said the zoo.
