Here's the termite forecast ...
TERMITES are on the march earlier than usual this year because of the high temperatures, leading to calls for weather forecast-style warnings about the wood-eating insects.
Termite control stations have suggested that housing authorities cooperate with the meteorological bureau to issue a termite warning along with weather reports.
This will remind residents and property management companies to take measures against the insects in good time, they said.
Officials from Shanghai Meteorological Bureau are studying the suggestion. Wang Yajuan, an official with the bureau, said: "It could be a good idea to offer a termite index."
Jing'an District Termite Control Station said yesterday it has received 180 phone calls for help since April - three times the usual figure.
"Residents should call professional services immediately if they detect termites in their homes," said Du Jianguo from the station.
Officials said taking termite preventative measures during house decoration is an effective strategy.
Professionals have been called in to eradicate termites during renovation work on old buildings on the Bund.
"Because of the high cost and people's low awareness, few residents come to us for termite preventative treatment," said Zhao Haili, director of Huangpu District Termite Control Station.
The insects tend to be found in old houses with wooden structures. They are likely to concentrate on the ground floor where it is warm and humid.
Professionals say termites usually become active in large numbers when the temperature passes 20 degrees Celsius, and the peak season is usually from April to June, just before the rainy season in the Yangtze River Delta region.
Their wood-nibbling habits can cause massive damage to furniture, floors and support beams.
