High-tech products reason for complaint
THE local consumers' rights watchdog received more than 542,000 complaints last year, 4 percent more than in 2007.
Complaints about the quality of products made up 37 percent of the total, while gripes about agreements signed between consumers and service providers made up 23 percent.
The main grumbles were about the quality of cell phones, computers and air conditioners. Officials said the country didn't have detailed quality standards for high-tech products and there was no way of knowing whether disputes were the result of faulty products or improper use. Officials urged the government to make specific quality standards.
As for complaints about service contracts, officials said delivery services came under heavy fire for hitting consumers with unfair or hidden charges.
One woman paid a firm 400 yuan (US$57) to send a parcel to her hometown. When it arrived, the company charged another 160 yuan.
Complaints about Internet service providers and online firms rose 9.5 percent. Most were about online game companies.
Players said that they blocked their IDs and confiscated equipment in the games for no reason.
