Hit-and-run killer avoids prison
A MOTORIST who fled the scene after knocking down and killing a cyclist has been given a suspended prison sentence, Jing’an District prosecutors said yesterday.
The court said the defendant, a 19-year-old identified only as Xiaojia, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and had not been paying due care and attention.
He was sentenced to three years in prison suspended for three years.
The victim, which happened in May at the junction of Yan’an and Fumin roads, was a man in his 60s. The court said the cyclist had been trying to cross the road against a red light.
The victim’s partial culpability was the reason for the defendant being given a suspended sentence, prosecutors said.
In China, incidents in which a motorized vehicle collides with a non-motorized vehicle or pedestrian are always deemed to be the “fault” of the driver of the former.
In court, the defendant admitted to fleeing the scene after the accident but handed himself in to police the following day.
In court he said he had drunk several glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz and was looking at his satellite navigation system at the time of the fatal crash, prosecutors said.
