Hospital workers took bribes, go to jail

TWO local hospital employees who took bribes from pharmaceutical companies for promoting their medicines were given prison terms, Changning District Court ruled in a recent case.

Li Xiang, an accountant, was sentenced to two years and six months with 30 months of probation and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,612).

Li accepted 95,000 yuan in bribes from both pharmaceutical companies and doctors as he managed the amount of drugs the hospital purchased and its drug stocks, prosecutors said. Li served as a bridge between doctors and pharmaceutical firms and took kickbacks by promoting certain medicines to doctors.

Another suspect, Li Fan, whose job involved the management and maintenance of medicine purchase data, was sentenced to 18 months and fined 10,000 yuan for taking 70,000 yuan in bribes.

Both defendants, who are not related, had the bribe money confiscated.

Both admitted their crimes during internal checks of their hospitals, prosecutors said. The names of the hospitals were not available.
