Hub opens for Pudong non-profits

NON-PROFIT organizations in the Pudong New Area got a base for offices and training yesterday with the opening of the service center.

The first such center on the Chinese mainland, it is expected to be replicated throughout the city, said the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

The center, occupying more than 3,200 square meters, provides space for training volunteers and social workers, and other activities. The site was originally a handkerchief factory.

Eighteen of the area's NPOs, such as Non-Profit Initiative Shanghai and Sowosky Social Work Service Center, have moved into the center.

The number will be expanded to 30 soon, covering NPOs devoted to seniors, social workers and other services.

Also launched yesterday: the Pudong non-profit Website, www.pudongnpo.org.cn, which will publish such information as the bidding on non-profit projects.
