Hundreds probed in anti-graft sweep

SHANGHAI prosecutors investigated 357 people in connection with 283 corruption cases last year, including 10 bureau directors, the city’s chief prosecutor said yesterday.
The number of directors investigated increased over the previous year as part of an intensified anti-graft push, said Zhang Bencai, chief prosecutor of the Shanghai People’s Prosecutors’ Office.
In his annual report to the Shanghai People’s Congress, he said seven bureau directors had been investigated in 2015.
The directors investigated last year included Hua Dongping, former deputy director of the standing committee of the Hongkou District People’s Congress, Jiang Jianming, former deputy president of Donghua University, and Zhang Guoqiang, former general manager of Sinopec’s Hong Kong subsidiary.
A total of 85 people were investigated in 74 major cases that involved bribes of more than 1 million yuan (US$690,000).
Eight fugitive officials were caught in China’s “Sky Net” anti-graft campaign, which started in April 2015 to repatriate fugitive officials.
Warrants were issued for 26,227 people in criminal cases last year while prosecutions were launched against 38,030 people. The figures in 2015 were 27,691 and 42,343, respectively.
A total of 834 people were prosecuted for serious criminal offenses including murder, robbery and kidnapping last year, Zhang said, about 12 percent fewer than in 2015.
Major cases include a man detonating a homemade bomb inside the T2 terminal at Pudong International Airport in June, injuring four people.
