Hundreds tie the knot on qixi
A TOTAL of 857 couples chose to tie the knot on qixi, or Chinese Valentine’s Day, said local civil affairs authorities.
The marriage registration centers in the Pudong New Area, and Chongming and Yangpu districts saw the largest number of weddings, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
The average number of marriage registrations in Pudong is about 60 per day, but it soared to 202 yesterday.
“We decided to get married on qixi because the date is special,” said Lily Wei, who lives in Yangpu District.
“It is a Chinese festival so it is more meaningful than the western Valentine’s Day for us,” she said.
The couple made a reservation in advance in case there were big crowds.
While yesterday’s turnout was impressive, it pales by comparison to Valentine’s Day. More than 1,500 couples got married in the city on that day this year.
On the auspicious date of October 10, 2010, local authorities registered the marriages of 10,150 couples.
In Chinese folklore, the number 10-10-10 symbolizes perfection.
