Husband axed wife's lover

A MAN killed his wife's lover in a frenzied ax attack and hid the body in an apartment block electrical substation, a court heard yesterday.

Zhang Jie, from Hongkou District, was appearing at Shanghai Intermediate People's Court, charged with murder.

Prosecutors said Zhang, 39, who has been married for more than 10 years and has a son, was enraged after discovering that his wife was having an affair with her colleague, who lived in the same neighborhood.

On January 27, Zhang waited near the apartment of his wife's lover, surnamed Tao. When Tao appeared, Zhang rushed at him and struck him repeatedly on the head with an ax, said prosecutors.

Zhang said in court that he was so nervous and angry at the time that he had no idea how many times he hit 58-year-old Tao.

"I just wanted to teach him a lesson, I didn't mean to kill him," said Zhang.

After Tao fell to the ground, Zhang dragged him into a nearby substation room and fled, the court heard.

While he pled guilty, Zhang insisted he did not know Tao was dead until he was arrested.

No verdict was announced.
