1,600 tickets issued in 10 days for illegal parking in busy shopping area in Pudong
THE problem of illegal parking around a busy shopping district in the Pudong New Area is stretching police resources to the limit, a local official said yesterday.
In the 10 days through last Friday, officers issued more than 1,600 tickets for violations committed in and around Shangcheng and Zhangyang roads, close to the popular shopping centers of Yaohan Mall and Shinmay Union Square, said Ding Hongqi, a police officer with the Pudong Public Security Bureau.
The motorists were each fined 200 yuan (US$32), while 600 others were issued with warning notes — an order to move on given to drivers who park illegally but remain in their cars. “The number of officers we have patrolling the area is the maximum we can allow,” Ding told Shanghai Daily.
“If the problem gets any worse, we might have to bring in more people,” he said.
As well as cracking down on offenders, police recently created 48 new parking spaces in the area, taking the total to 2,020.
In 2012, there were far fewer shopping malls in the area, but more public parking spaces, Ding said.
“Over the years a lot of them have simply disappeared, either into private hands or to make way for new developments,” he said.
