Illegal pigeonry dismantled

The illegal pigeonry on top of a 10-story building in Baoshan District was partly dismantled yesterday.

Work to remove the illegal structure, which housed 249 pigeons on the rooftop, began at 8am yesterday.

Ironically, the workers had to build a temporary “pigeonry” to replace the demolished structure for the pigeons before they can find a new home for them.

It needed a team of 30 workers, sent by the local authorities and the carrier pigeon association, to get the job done.

They entered the premises at 7:30am and then helped workers hired by the owner to demolish the pigeonry.

One of the workers said it was not very difficult to dismantle the wooden structure although it was a big one. Officials from the Baoshan District government oversaw the proceedings.

Workers had dismantled one story of the two-story wooden pigeonry with cutters and hammers by 1pm.

The complete structure will be pulled down in the next two days. A team kept a watch in front of the building to make sure that the other residents’ safety were ensured.

Lu Weiping, who runs the carrier pigeon association in Baoshan District, said it will help find a new pigeonry for the birds.
