Illegal sales of methadone increase
Methadone, a medicine prescribed to drug addicts to assist in their recovery, is increasingly sold illegally in the city after 19 cases were brought to a local district court since July.
The Huangpu District People’s Court advised that more stringent supervision should be followed in the taking of the medicine. The court said at least two medical workers should be present when a drug addict takes methadone.
A drug addict, surnamed Chen, was recently given seven years in jail after being found guilty of selling over 300 grams of methadone, prescribed to him as a substitute for heroin during his treatment, the court said.
It was the 19th case involving the illegal sales of methadone the court has heard since July.
Prosecutors said Chen, 35, was a hotel security guard who had been an addict since age 16 and had been punished several times. In recent years he was forced to undergo anti-addictive treatment in a medical center.
He was caught selling a bottle containing 313.56 grams of methadone to another drug addict on June 15.
